Lend Your Voice: Contact Your Legislator

Washington State has made great strides in ending youth homelessness, and these efforts must continue.

We invite you to use the language below when contacting your local state legislators.

Dear Legislator,

I am writing to urge you to support and preserve funding for programs that address youth homelessness in Washington State, specifically:

  • Homelessness Prevention and Diversion Fund (HPDF)

  • Extended Foster Care

  • Community Support Teams

  • Community Based Family Reconciliation Services.

These programs provide young people with the support they need to break the cycle of homelessness and build stable, independent futures.

As a [citizen/advocate/professional in the field], I have witnessed firsthand the challenges young people face when experiencing homelessness. Youth homelessness impacts communities in every corner of our state. But the investments we have made are working. Thanks to these programs, Washington has seen nearly a 40% reduction in the number of young people facing housing instability.

Yet, there is more work to be done. Without continued investment, many vulnerable young people will lose access to the critical support they need.  Research shows that early intervention and comprehensive services significantly reduce long-term homelessness. Cutting or reducing funding would not only harm at-risk youth but also place a greater strain on emergency services and public resources in the long run.

The programs work. Washington can continue to make meaningful progress if we sustain funding.

I urge you to champion continued funding for HPDF, Extended Foster Care, and Family Reconciliation Services. Ensuring that these programs remain fully funded is an investment in the future of our community.

Thank you for your time and commitment to serving our community.
